Our Top 6 Tips to Prepare Your House For Spring

Our Top 6 Tips to Prepare Your House For Spring

Getting ready for the change of seasons is exciting, but there are always tasks to get done before enjoying the great outdoors. Many await the first signs of spring and warmer weather, but you may also notice areas of your home that need some TLC after a long winter. Spring cleaning allows us to tackle our to-do lists and prepare for some much needed maintenance both indoors and outdoors.

1) Check the Exterior for Any Needed Repairs

This is an ideal time to check the outside of your home for any wear and tear that may have occurred over the winter. After the cold weather passes, especially if it was a harsh winter, it can leave roofs and siding in rough shape. Depending on the age of your home and any damage that may have occurred, it can even result in bigger problems if not addressed and repaired properly.

2) Power Wash the Exterior

Whether your home is brick or has vinyl siding, it can take a hit from fall and winter weather. Rain, sleet, and snow during the winter can take longer to dry and often result in dirt and debris that can accumulate near houses, on decks and porches, and surrounding structures. Power washing your home can eliminate any buildup, restore curb appeal, and lessen the likelihood of damage.

3) Plan an Outdoor Space

With the excitement of spring approaching, it’s always a great idea to plan some outdoor events. What better place to do so than right in your backyard? A gazebo or deck with seating will be the perfect place to entertain and enjoy springtime. A sunroom or screened porch is ideal if you want to enjoy the outdoors no matter the weather, or want to bring some of the outdoors into your living space.

4) Landscape a Garden Patio

Nothing adds to the comfort and inviting feeling of spring like a nice landscaped patio space. Small trees and flowering shrubs are beautiful and can be planted anywhere around your yard. The possibilities are practically endless and you can even get some nice seating custom-built to make the space perfect for entertaining. Our Gallery features projects we have completed that can provide inspiration for your own deck or patio remodel.

5) Clear Out the Gutters and Downspouts

Fall and winter weather can result in a lot of debris gathering in your gutters and downspouts. Gutters and downspouts that are not functioning properly or clogged will result in water runoff that could negatively impact your home, possibly even resulting in roof leaks or foundation issues. Routinely keeping these areas clear will allow them to work as intended and prevent potential problems.

6) Check Plumbing Fixtures

The colder months tend to be harsh on plumbing. This might not be as much of an issue if you’re fortunate enough to have a basement or a conditioned crawl space. It is still a good idea to check the pipes and fixtures for any leaks or other problems in order to prevent more serious plumbing issues or water damage.

Classic Construction in Richmond, Virginia can help you make sure your home is spring ready. Whether you need preventive maintenance, repairs or want to add on to your home with the addition of a deck, we can inspire and build what you’re looking for. What You Need to Know About Hardie Plank Siding

What You Need to Know About Hardie Plank Siding

If you’re looking for high-quality construction materials, you’ll notice “Hardie Plank” comes up at least a few times. Hardie Plank is a brand-name siding material from the James Hardie Corporation, and it’s known for its durability. It’s a double-siding product made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. The biggest asset of Hardie Plank siding is that it is fire-proof. On top of that, it comes with a long-lasting warranty.

As a construction company, we know the ins and outs of various building materials and feel that the choice depends on your home’s structure, location, and the owner’s needs, wants, and budget. So if you’re trying to decide what material is best for your home, it’s a good idea to consult a professional! Until then, here is what you should know about Hardie Plank siding.

The Pros of Hardie Plank Siding

Overall, this popular material is worth the cost for those with the time and budget to spare for its installation. There are a number of reasons that Hardie Plank siding is highly sought-after.

  • Pest resistant – It’s made from materials that termites can’t chew through. Mice, woodpeckers, and other pests won’t be able to damage it.
  • 30-Year warranty – If anything does happen to your home, you’ll have a 30-year warranty with the company, which is a fantastic value.
  • Highly customizable – Hardie Plank siding comes in several different textures, so whether you want realistic-looking wood or something more smooth and modern, you can find plenty of options here.
  • Adds to resale value – As a high-quality, long-lasting material, your house will be valued at a higher price than if you used vinyl siding, as it deteriorates much faster.
  • Fire-proof – One of the most significant advantages of using Hardie Plank is that it is non-combustible, which is one of the reasons it is highly sought after. Insurance companies are often willing to provide a discount on home insurance if Hardie Plank is used due to it being non-combustible. While heat will transfer through, this type of siding will not ignite if exposed to a direct flame or contribute fuel to a fire.

Hardie Plank Siding Cons

There are a few significant drawbacks when it comes to Hardie Plank siding. Here’s what you should keep in mind before you make any big decisions, and again, every home and location is different, so it’s a good idea to ask our professionals.

  • Pricing – Its brand name and reputation make Hardie Plank already more expensive than its competition, but again, you’re getting quality for the price. The price also goes up for this product because there’s only one company producing it, and increased demand and lower supplies always equal an increased price. Finally, this product is heavier than many other construction planks, which adds to its durability, making it much pricier to ship. Shipping costs for this product add to the expense. So initially, Hardie Plank siding is an investment but one that adds protection and value to your home.
  • Installation – Not all construction and contracting companies have experts in installing Hardie Plank siding. Due to its heavier weight and durability, it’s harder to install than vinyl, and the process is more time-consuming and difficult. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done, though. You have to find a construction company with the expertise necessary to deal with this material.

Classic Construction, the leading remodeling contractor in Richmond, has a highly trained and experienced team of professionals that specialize in the installation and maintenance of Hardie Plank siding.

What is Fiber Cement Siding?

Fiber cement siding is a popular construction material due to its low cost and long-lasting quality. It’s made from a combination of ingredients, including wood pulp, fly ash, and portland cement. Over the last few decades, demand for this construction material has skyrocketed, enabling homeowners to rest easy knowing their home’s central structure is weather and termite-proof.

Fiber cement requires professional installation but will last for decades. There are alternative building materials, like wood, vinyl, brick, or stucco, and though these are also quality materials, they don’t last as long. Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering installing fiber cement siding in your home.

Advantages of Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement was created from a mix of ingredients specifically created to last. The wood and cement mix holds paint extremely well, so you don’t have to repaint for 10-20 years. The wood fibers prevent cracking and chipping, so your property will continue to look new.

Fiber cement became popular when builders began to replace old construction materials containing asbestos. It’s fire-resistant and generally weather-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about your building materials rotting or molding because of rain and snow.

Though made with some wood for the quality, the cement filler prevents pests! Termites cause billions of dollars in damage annually for homeowners in the United States. Rats and mice also find homes in other building materials and can structurally damage your home by chewing holes and electric wiring. Fiber cement means you don’t have to worry about these nuisances.

It’s also very low maintenance. Fiber cement siding is very easy to clean. With just a hose, you can get off any dust, dirt, or leaves.

Finally, because of its durability and efficiency, fiber cement siding increases the value of your home. Any building or remodeling you do should increase your property value, and replacing your current siding with fiber cement is a great investment.

Fiber Cement Styles

When it was first introduced, this material wasn’t very common, and only a few designs were available. But now, you can pretty much get any design done in fiber cement. Whether you want a wood look with boards or you’re going for more of a mid-century tile wall style, fiber cement can be customized to match your dream aesthetic.

Fiber cement boards can be painted or textured, so you can either go for a smooth stucco look or textured to look like wood. You can choose from dozens of different styles, including lap, plank, vertical, shake, curved-shake, and geometric patterns.

If you’re looking to remodel your home’s exterior, call Classic Construction at 804-794-5690. Our experts will be happy to assist you in picking out the perfect materials for your budget and aesthetic. We’ve served the Richmond, VA, community for 20 years, providing quality remodels for all types of homes.

How to Create The Ideal Mudroom

How to Create The Ideal Mudroom

How to Create The Ideal Mudroom

Mudrooms are essential for homeowners since it is an area utilized frequently and the entrance you use most often, so there is high foot traffic. This area can be for storage, like leaving outdoor clothing such as shoes and coats before entering a home. Sometimes mudrooms include a sink to wash hands or to clean items you don’t want to bring indoors. Some include a washer and dryer for extra dirty laundry like sportswear.

A well-designed mudroom will be exceedingly useful while also adding value to your home. It will help tremendously to make your daily routine a lot smoother and more organized, especially for active families.

1) Install a bench for storage and seating

A bench seat is versatile and useful in a mudroom while providing durability and a convenient spot for additional storage. It will come in use to take off and put on outerwear and footwear. It’s not only a place to sit down, but it’s also a great addition for hidden storage.

2) A divider for multi-use areas

Mudrooms are multi-purpose, therefore a divider is a significant consideration. It can help separate the area into a space for storing items not used daily, and an area for daily items like outdoor clothing, shoes, and pet accessories such as leashes and harnesses. Hooks and hanging clips are great to add on.

3) Easy to clean durable floors

The mudroom is typically one of the most high-traffic areas and it’s where the majority of mud, dirt, and any outdoor muck can gather, so they are built with durability in mind. With all that outdoor traffic, an easy-to-clean floor is a must. A vinyl plank is a great choice, as it is stain-resistant and easy to clean, with many design options to choose from. The addition of an indoor/outdoor rug can help make the floor feel more comfortable.

4) Individual designated sections

Having a place to put everything is great, but having designated spots for each family member is the key to organization. Everyone will be more organized if they know precisely where they put their scarf or raincoat. This simple yet perfect way to keep items accessible and easily organized will save lots of time.

5) Counter space for grocery bags and other shopping items

Unloading groceries and other items, particularly during inclement weather, has its challenges. As you make your way in with your hands full of shopping bags, a mudroom is a good “in-between” spot to set these items down. Counters can be made of any durable, easy-to-clean material such as granite or tile.

Top Renovation Trends for 2023

Top Renovation Trends for 2023

Whether your home was just built, or you’ve got an older home in need of some TLC, we’ve got you covered. If you’re looking to add some storage space or do a larger remodeling job, these are some of the top trends that will have your guests asking who is responsible for the craftsmanship and renovations in your home.

Built-in Storage

You can never have too much storage space, and some homes, more than others, are greatly lacking storage. Why not make these spaces a stylish, trendy addition? Function and style are easier than you might think. Here are some ideas for storage add-ons.

  • Consider the benefits of adding a pantry to help with storing food items you don’t have a spot for or items that are taking up all your cabinet space. Pantry spaces are typically inset and “hidden” offering multi-level shelves with plenty of storage that matches your existing decor.
  • A closet addition will be a great option for storing your winter wardrobe that is taking up much-needed dresser space. Organization can be a challenge especially if you have a large family but that extra closet space will surely make it easier and will keep items accessible.

Master Suite Additions

Adding onto a master suite can transition it from decent to functional and spacious, and adds value to your home. Why not make that space all it can be with these options?

  • Some master suite areas may not have an added washroom. The convenience of a private bathroom especially if you have children cannot be overstated. Consider this an addition that makes sense financially—greatly increasing value—and personally.
  • Is your master suite lacking closet space? It’s the ideal time to consider a walk-in closet. This add-on may seem simple compared to other renovation projects, yet the benefits are huge. It’s a fact that you can never have too much closet space.

Kitchen Expansion

Adding onto a kitchen or dining area is always a popular idea. There are many options to improve this space as many families spend a significant amount of time together in this area of the home. This room needs to be functional, practical, and simultaneously stylish to meet your design preference.

  • An island in your kitchen can provide much-needed counter space and storage. Customizable additions are made to match your existing decor. Plenty of options for island sizes means this modern addition can fit into your kitchen area. More counter space and storage? Yes, please!
  • Custom cabinets can drastically transform kitchens. Giving you the benefit of a whole new look without a complete remodel is one of the many benefits of new cabinets. From wood options to styles to cabinet pulls, it’s a fun and creative way to revamp a kitchen and bring a sense of new into your space.

These are just some of the wonderful renovation ideas to consider for 2023. Any home can greatly benefit from exterior and interior remodeling. Our customers have come to expect the best and that’s what we provide. From our experienced office to our skilled installers we take pride in top-notch quality work we’d be proud to have in our own homes. Make Your Home Winter Ready

Make Your Home Winter Ready

The change of the seasons brings a lot to worry about for homeowners. Your top priority is making sure that your house is sealed to the elements and will hold up no matter how harsh the weather is this winter. Most homes can benefit from a small remodel and renewal to ensure that everything is in top condition.

At the end of the day, your home is an asset, and you want to keep up its resale value. Ignoring the needs of your structure only becomes more expensive. When something needs to be repaired or replaced, it’s best to do that as soon as possible. Otherwise, the damage worsens. Your roof, walls, windows, and even your patio may need some attention before the winter weather.

Here are some tips on making your home winter ready.

1) Seal, Caulk, and Fix Your Exterior Walls

Start with the exterior of your home. If you haven’t refreshed the paint for a while, or checked for holes and other signs of deterioration, autumn is the best time to do that. Giving your home a new coat of weather-resistant paint is a great idea before the harsh winter weather. Your home will be much more energy efficient.

You may not even realize it but you may have cracks and holes that can affect the structure of your home. Leaks develop in old homes that greatly affect your quality of life as well as your home’s resale value. Exposed holes in your exterior can also lead to pest problems. As the weather turns colder, pests like roaches, rats, and termites seek a warm place to shelter and an exterior with cracks and holes is inviting.

2) Check Your Roof Shingles

Having your roof inspected or doing it yourself is a vital part of winterizing your home. If you haven’t had your roof replaced or looked at by professionals for a few years, it’s a good idea to do that. Holes or broken shingles in the roof compromise your home’s structure. The last thing you need is a leaky roof in the middle of winter.

3) Clean and Seal Your Deck

Even rot-resistant wood doesn’t last forever. Though most decks and outdoor spaces are built with materials to last, failing to properly maintain this wood will require more construction in the end. You don’t have to seal your wood every single year, but autumn is a good time to check. If you pour out some water, does it bead or absorb into the wood? If it absorbs, it’s time to seal your deck. If your deck already has rotting or chipping boards, you may want to renovate the deck altogether.

4) Check Your Doors and Windows

Old doors and windows account for a lot of the money you spend on heating your house in the winter. You can seal your windows and any holes in your doors, but if you can, replacing your windows once every 10-20 years will save you a lot of money in heating and cooling costs. Professional window installation will ensure that your glass is sturdy enough to withstand the winds, and any cracks around the windows are sealed to prevent drafts.

Improving Curb Appeal with Home Upgrades

siding richmond va

Your home is one of the most important investments you’ll ever make, and when you complete quality home improvement projects, you’re shoring up that investment. One of the ways to add value to your home is by choosing updates that improve curb appeal.

When selling a home, first impressions are important, so anything you can do to boost curb appeal can help interested buyers put in an offer.

Vinyl siding replacement is one of the best ways to transform the look of your home’s exterior, but quality siding offers other benefits as well, including protecting your home from the elements and improving energy efficiency.

Of course, all replacement siding isn’t created equally, so it’s important to choose local siding installation professionals who use premium materials from trusted brands. Fiber cement siding is an excellent option, but it’s more expensive than vinyl.

The good news is that you can get most of the same benefits from a premium vinyl siding product as you would from fiber cement—but premium is the keyword. Some of those benefits include:

  • Siding Styles that Mimic the Look of Hardwood or Slate
  • Dozens of Color Options that Won’t Fade Over Time
  • An Attractive Low-Gloss Finish
  • Fire Resistance
  • Mold Resistance
  • Insulated Options that Improve Energy Efficiency

Lower-end vinyl siding doesn’t offer the same rich look as high-quality brands, and it’s much more likely to suffer damage and to fade over time. Top-rated siding products, however, will provide many years of low-maintenance performance.

In addition to vinyl siding installation, replacement windows and doors are other home upgrades that add value to your Richmond property.

Classic Construction Building Playhouses to Support CASA to End Child Abuse

Coming this spring is the second annual CASA Home for Good Event. This event partners with local builders who are well-versed in designing and constructing homes to put their expertise to use in a fun and meaningful way – creating playhouses to bring awareness and funding for CASA’s children’s support services.

The Home For Good Event

For the second year running, CASA’s Home For Good Event, with its beautiful playhouses that resonate childhood fun and innocence, provide a tangible demonstration of what childhood should be, as a backdrop for the fundraising event.

This spring, from April 22 to May 8, 2022, the playhouses will be on display at the Short Pump Town Center for public viewing. As part of the event donations will be graciously accepted, with the donors also being entered into the raffle to win these playhouses. Each playhouse will be delivered to a lucky winner’s home, with the drawing to be held after the close of the event in May.

Last year, $80,000 was raised for CASA, with the event being supported by local businesses and public donations. Sponsorship information is available at www.henricocasa.org/HomeForGood/.

About CASA

Virginia’s local Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocate program (CASA) is a Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services child advocacy organization with the mission of providing trained volunteers to speak for local children who are had been abused or neglected and are subjects of juvenile court proceedings.

CASA has served more than 3,750 children in the Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, and that number continues to grow, with the Home For Good event helping to fund the court advocacy program and activities to aide children with the legal services they need.

Classic Construction’s Playhouse

As a local small business with longstanding roots in the community, Classic Construction is proud to have been selected as one of the participating builders for this important event. Our home remodeling experts look forward to designing and building a playhouse for this event – to help bring awareness to the cause and the organization, while also helping to support the mission with the fundraising effort.

Last year we were delighted to participate and were overjoyed with the response it had achieved from our community. With the response from last year’s playhouses, we expect the success of this year’s event to be even greater.
