Remodeling Trends For 2024

Image

In 2024 the world of home remodeling is witnessing a fascinating blend of innovation, sustainability, and exciting design trends. Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to enhance their living spaces, making them not just aesthetically pleasing but also multi-functional and eco-friendly.

Smart Homes, Smarter Spaces

The integration of smart home technology continues to be a prevailing trend. Homeowners are opting for eco-friendly systems that seamlessly connect various aspects of their homes, from lighting and security to temperature control. Smart appliances and voice-activated assistants are becoming staples, creating homes that are not just beautiful but also technologically advanced.

Nature-Inspired Design

The year 2024 brings a natural aesthetic and appreciation for nature, with homeowners incorporating organic elements into their living spaces. Wood-finished cabinets and tables, the use of natural materials, indoor plants, and ample natural light are all on the radar for interior design. Earthy tones, textures inspired by the outdoors, and sustainable furnishings work to contribute to a harmonious and calming environment.

Flexible Spaces for Remote Work

The remote work culture, prevalent in recent years, has led to a surge in demand for home offices and multifunctional spaces. Homeowners are investing in flexible designs that allow rooms to serve multiple purposes, accommodating both work and leisure seamlessly. Convertible furniture and soundproofing solutions are becoming essential elements in creating efficient and productive home office spaces. A previously unused space such as a basement or extra bedroom, and exterior rooms can be transformed into a home office.

Our talented team of builders can bring those ideas to expand your living and working space to life. A project focusing on the open floor plan of rooms to utilize the maximum space while providing a modern look is a popular trend for those who work at home. If you want an office space without feeling confined in a small room this could be your answer.

Sustainable Living

Sustainability is not just a buzzword but a guiding principle in home remodeling this year. From energy-efficient appliances to recycled materials, homeowners are making eco-conscious choices. Solar panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and energy-efficient windows are being integrated to reduce the environmental footprint of homes, reflecting a commitment to sustainable living.

Wellness Retreat Bathrooms

Bathrooms are following recent trends of being transformed into personal wellness retreats. Luxurious features such as smart mirrors, touchless faucets, and spa tubs are becoming increasingly popular. Homeowners are also incorporating spa-like elements, including heated floors, aromatherapy, and ample greenery, creating a serene oasis within the confines of their homes.

Our Richmond bath remodelers are here to bring your ideas to life and transform your current bath area into a dreamy custom spa space. With shelving for aromatherapy products such as candles, high-quality vanities, custom tile, and spa-inspired mood lighting, your bathroom can be all this and more.

Open Shelving and Statement Storage

Homeowners are opting for statement storage solutions that not only serve a functional purpose but also act as design focal points. Floating shelves, custom cabinetry, and creative storage solutions are gaining popularity, adding character and personality to living spaces. A well-situated open shelving space can work to be beautiful and functional.

Exterior Entertainment Space

An exterior area that serves to welcome guests while allowing them to have comfort and enjoy the warmer weather is a perfect option for your remodeling goals. There are so many ways to spruce up an existing exterior space, deck, or patio, including outdoor additions and custom screen porches. These are all a popular way to enjoy the outdoors and to accommodate all your friends and family. We offer a variety of premium outdoor products to enhance these spaces and provide durable materials that are long-lasting and meet your needs.

Ways to Increase Home Value in 2024

Image

Your home is a valuable asset that can increase with the right upgrades. Since some spaces in your house provide more financial gains than others it’s a good idea to know which will bring the most value when considering a home remodeling project.

This list of home improvement projects will guide you as you consider what the best options are for your home. Keep in mind some are more of an undertaking than others as far as budget and time. Our professionals are here to help you get started.

Remodel your unfinished basement

Some homes have unused spaces that have the potential to be modern living areas after the essential “finishing touches” are added. Basements that are used for storage or sit empty provide a blank slate and are a perfect area to increase functional living and entertaining space.

Depending on the square footage, your basement can serve as an entertainment area, a family room, or even a guest suite. New paint, flooring, and some furniture can bring this space to life. There are many options for durable, affordable flooring such as vinyl plank which is an increasingly popular choice for any room.

Improve energy efficiency

Deciding to invest in your home is an important choice and considering the benefits of each dollar spent is key. Energy-efficient, premium windows and doors are perhaps one of the best long-term ways to save money. When new exterior doors and windows are installed by professionals the benefits are well worth the investment.

The selections we offer not only give your home quality products that add efficiency but also provide the style options you desire and coverage with a limited lifetime warranty. After all, windows and doors are an important part of your home, functionally and visually.

Exterior makeover

Every house can benefit from an inviting exterior. Investing in the exterior of your home will give you an outdoor area to enjoy family time and entertain company, plus you’ll be increasing value. The exterior is also the first impression of your home if it’s on the market and you want to attract potential buyers.

Whether you’re considering a new deck, a screened-in sunroom, or a patio with a fire pit and grilling area, we are your local experts. You can never have too much exterior entertainment space where you’ll create lasting memories. As a leading contractor in Richmond, we construct high-quality decks and patios, among other outdoor living options, so you can enjoy all areas of your home.

Some key points to consider when remodeling a home

These are just a few of the ways you can increase the value of your home and maximize the use of specific areas. The amount of time a project will take for completion and limitations regarding access to the space vary. For example, if the work is taking place in a basement area or exterior space it may have little to no impact upon your daily routine. On the other hand, a kitchen or bath renovation can limit the use of those rooms for a certain amount of time.

We always work with you to ensure a seamless remodeling experience and are available to answer any questions you may have about the time frame of the project.

What Home Improvement Projects Have The Best ROI

Image

When talking about home improvement and getting the most out of your return on investment (ROI), not all projects are created equal. Whether you’re looking to enhance your living space or preparing to sell, choosing projects that add value to your home is crucial.

Let’s examine some of the best home improvement projects that promise a high ROI.

Kitchen Renovation or Remodel

The heart of the home, the kitchen, is a key focal point for many buyers. You don’t necessarily need a complete kitchen overhaul for a good ROI. Sometimes minor upgrades like changing cabinet hardware, updating lighting fixtures, or adding a tile backsplash can give a fresh, modern look that’s still within your budget.

Some kitchen areas may need more upgrading than others. Homes with outdated or worn flooring and appliances will be larger projects but these improvements result in greater home value. Focus on functionality and aesthetics to make this space stand out.

Bathroom Remodeling

Bathrooms are another area where a little investment can go a long way. Upgrading lighting, fixtures, a new vanity, or even a stylish new mirror can significantly contribute to ROI. If your bathroom layout is not functional or things start to fall apart over time, like plumbing issues or loose tiles, it’s time to deal with them so it doesn’t become a bigger problem.

Just as some kitchens need more upgrades than others, the same applies to bathrooms. Outdated tiles and floors or changing the layout are larger projects than fixture upgrades and paint, but the ROI makes it a wise choice.

Energy-Efficient Windows

Upgrades to increase energy efficiency are a major benefit to homeowners. Replacing old windows with energy-efficient ones not only enhances your home’s appeal but also helps in reducing energy bills.

This project offers a good ROI but also aligns with the importance of environmentally conscious living. Everyone wants to save money on utility costs and do their part to conserve, it’s a win-win. All of our energy-efficient windows are Energy Star approved, come in a variety of colors and wood grain options, and feature a limited lifetime warranty.

Deck Addition or Upgrade

Outdoor living spaces are becoming more important to homeowners. Adding a deck or upgrading an existing one can provide a great return on investment. An additional benefit is how much an exterior addition extends the usable square footage of your home and creates a space for relaxation and entertainment.

Basement Finishing

If you have an unfinished basement, completing it can add valuable multifunctional living space to your home that offers more room for entertaining and convenience. A well-designed basement can serve as an additional bedroom, home office, or entertainment area, providing a versatile selling point.

Depending on the size and exterior access to your basement it can even serve as a living suite for family or a guest suite when company is in town.

New Flooring

Outdated flooring can negatively affect the charm and overall feel of any room. When floors are replaced or refinished, it adds a surprising amount of value to homes and can make a room feel like new. It’s one of the first things people notice, especially when buying a property. Whether refinishing a beautiful hardwood floor or a newly tiled bathroom, investing in flooring will be worthwhile.

The key to a successful home improvement project is balancing preference and market trends. While personalizing your space is important, keeping an eye on features that have broad appeal ensures a higher ROI when the time comes to sell. By investing wisely in your home, you not only improve your current living experience but also secure a solid return on your investment in the future.

What’s the Difference: Renovation vs. Remodel

Image

Home renovations and home remodels are both beneficial to increase value, improve functionality, and meet your needs. They often get mixed up so it’s important to know the differences.

You might wonder what a renovation or remodeling project involves and how they differ. Renovation projects repair and update existing spaces while keeping their original purpose. Some examples include painting, updating appliances, or replacing flooring.

Remodeling a space in a home often involves changing the existing layout or function of a room. Some examples include installing a kitchen island, removing walls, and combining two rooms into one, or an addition.

What’s the Difference Between Remodeling and Renovating?

1) Total project cost varies depending on the work that is being done but in general, remodeling can be more expensive than a renovation since a remodeling job involves more material and labor. These factors, depending on your budget, should be carefully considered.

2) The time that it takes to complete a remodeling job is typically far greater than the time it takes to renovate an existing area. When interior work is being done on your home, you’ll have workers in and out of your home throughout the process. Workers take care to limit the disruptions that take place but construction work can be noisy and it’s likely to at least minimally disrupt your normal day-to-day routines.

3) Convenience is major when it comes to home projects. Renovation work might not be as involved as remodeling but it all depends on your home and family’s needs. Remodeling a portion of your home will limit access to that area. Renovation work will limit it, too, but usually not as much or for as much time. If your home has multiple levels, several bathrooms, or options for dining and entertainment areas, or if you’ve got a small family, it might not be a factor. At Classic Construction, we work with you every step of the way and check in throughout the project to ensure minimal disruption for you and your family.

4) Consider whether you like your current home design or if there are some major flaws in the layout. Some older homes might have a different interior flow than newer homes offer. In these cases, a remodel instead of a renovation might be more ideal. Your customization options are more limited with a renovation since they focus on restoring the building or room to its former condition. So it’s mainly an aesthetic change when a renovation takes place. A remodeling project offers more options to customize and transform a space.

5) Your return on investment (ROI) when deciding whether to renovate or start a remodeling project is something to consider. Since renovation work generally costs less than a remodel and typically involves smaller projects, it’s usually a much better investment. Updating floors and countertops during renovation in kitchens, for instance, adds immensely to the appeal and value. If your home suffers from a poor design such as a closed-off living room that feels stuffy then a remodel might be worth the additional investment to open up the space and make it more functional. Perhaps the bathroom is small and there’s an option to expand it with a wall removal. These all bring increased value and make a wise investment, but it depends on your budget and what you are looking for to meet your style and needs.

5 Practical Kitchen Upgrades That Add Home Value

Image

Any home improvement project will add value to your home when done professionally and this is especially true with kitchens. Some upgrades are more essential than others in this space, so let’s examine our top choices for practical upgrades that add value to your property.

1) Countertops are an important element of your kitchen, adding functionality and visual appeal. Many homes offer a kitchen space that’s workable but could greatly benefit from more counter space. The options are more varied than you might think. Marble, granite, and quartz countertops are popular contenders for a look that’s sleek and practical while durable. They will all add value to your home but there are some cost differences. Marble is the priciest of these choices with quartz coming in second. Granite has become a very popular choice due to its wide availability of options and affordability.

2) Flooring is an upgrade worth considering and is very budget-friendly. A new floor can transform a kitchen, making it seem more open, especially if you’re replacing dark flooring with a lighter color. Older homes with worn floors are ideal contenders for new flooring. The options are more varied now than ever before. Whether you choose tile, or vinyl plank flooring which is extremely durable, you’re sure to find a style that fits your desired aesthetic and fits your budget.

3) New appliances are an essential kitchen upgrade. If you upgraded your entire kitchen but left the old appliances installed, consider updating your appliances with newer models that introduce energy efficiency and improve functionality. Refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers are available in a range of colors and functions. Choosing the right look and functions of new appliances is important for maximum value while ensuring your family needs are met.

4) Updated cabinets can optimize functionality and organization in the kitchen. New cabinets can create an entirely new space at the heart of your home, but can also bring more function and provide additional storage. You can also customize the design and create exactly what you need with finishes, hardware, and other features. With a custom-built installation, they will fit perfectly while providing the function every kitchen can benefit from.

5) A kitchen expansion is an ideal way to increase home value. With a custom builder like Classic Construction, we ensure your kitchen addition is practical and you are informed every step of the way. Adding additional square footage to an existing kitchen gives you options that might not otherwise exist, like a breakfast nook or large island for family gatherings. More room for cooking and entertaining is always a step in the right direction for added value to any home.

What to Do After a Storm Damages Your Home

Storm Damages Your Home

Unfortunately, weather events are highly damaging all over the country. Different areas have to deal with climate-specific disasters every year, from hurricanes and snowstorms to mudslides and tornadoes. These storms are becoming more frequent, so it’s vital that you have a plan and know what to do if your home has been damaged during a storm.

Here are the steps you need to take after a destructive storm hits your home or property.

1) Stay Safe, Stay Calm

It’s easier said than done, but damaged homes are unstable and unsafe, so it’s best not to go running through the property and panic. If you’re still in the house, find a safe pathway and stay out. Watch your step! Broken glass, nails, and displaced screws are all standard after any storm damage. Your walls or roof may also be compromised and in danger of collapsing, so watch out for any cracks or signs that these might cave in.

Be aware of gas leak signs. Gas lines are another common fixture affected by heavy weather and home damage. If you smell gas, turn off the gas line to your home or call for help quickly. Look for downed power lines and always assume they are live — stay at least 10 feet away. Don’t step in standing water, and don’t light any matches until you’re sure it’s safe, as you don’t know where there may be gas leaks.

Once the storm has entirely passed, you can begin looking for the damage. You’ll have to stay calm and organized through the following steps, but remember that it’s likely your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover a majority of the damage.

2) Start Taking Photos Immediately

When you’re sure everyone is safe, you can take photos around the property. Luckily, this is no longer a difficult task with quality smartphones. Take as many pictures from various angles as you can. This is evidence for the insurance company. You should focus on getting photos of broken walls, doors, shingles, or other structural damage. Stay safe while doing this! You should only take photos of areas you can actually access without being harmed. The insurance company will eventually send an adjuster to take photos of any damage you can’t access right away.

It’s also important to get pictures of damaged electric appliances (like AC units) and your personal property if it was destroyed or affected by the storm. Note and photograph any moisture damage after a flood or hurricane, as water can ruin carpets, seep under the walls, lead to mold, etc. If there’s fire damage, it’s vital to document everything, including down electrical wires and power lines.

3) Contact Your Insurance Agent

You should contact your insurance agent as soon as possible after the storm. You’ll have to file a claim and submit all the photographs you took as proof. Depending on what your policy covers, if your home is too damaged to live in, insurance may cover a hotel or temporary housing. Your agent will have to walk you through the following steps, so stay in contact with them until your claim is resolved.

4) Keep Everything Documented

To get the total payout you’re expecting from your insurance company, you must keep everything documented. Note down when you spoke to your agent and filed the claim, keep any receipts for hotels, or any clean-up or construction that has to happen to make your property habitable.

5) Contact a Trusted Remodeling Company

Classic Construction serves Richmond, VA, homeowners after natural disasters of all kinds and understands how stressful the situation can be for families. We make the process of remodeling your home as easy as possible, so you can get back in there and enjoy your space again. Vinyl Siding vs Fiber Cement Siding

Vinyl Siding vs Fiber Cement Siding

Choosing suitable materials to build your home isn’t that complicated. Thanks to technology, there are a lot of choices out there. What’s best depends on your home’s location, budget, and specific needs. The two most popular materials for siding are vinyl and fiber cement. Each one is a good option that offers several pros and cons.

What to Know About Vinyl Siding

This material is the number one most popular siding in the U.S. It’s made from PVC, a hard plastic that can expand and contract with the materials underneath. This makes it reasonably long-lasting — a Census Bureau report states that vinyl siding lasts about 20 years.

Some reasons to choose vinyl siding:

  • Long-lasting
  • Many aesthetic design choices
  • Excellent insulation (Insulated vinyl siding is also an option with other advantages)
  • Less maintenance (you won’t have to repaint the exterior)
  • Weather and storm-proof
  • Costs less

There aren’t too many cons of vinyl siding for a new home, but there are some facts to consider. Vinyl siding is not as fire-resistant as its counterpart. Plastic melts, so this may not be the best material for homes in hot climates as your siding may warp in the sun. This material comes in various designs and colors, so you can quickly find something that suits your taste but you won’t be able to repaint or change the color of vinyl siding later. Also, because it is plastic, vinyl has a more manufactured look than Hardie Plank siding, and this aesthetic difference is a big deciding factor.

Everything About Hardie Plank Siding

Hardie Plank siding is manufactured by the James Hardie company, known for quality materials and an eco-friendly outlook. Hardie fiber cement siding is made from a mixture of Portland wood and cement, made to look like natural wood boards, and is directly nailed to your house. It’s pricier, but it lasts at least 20 years, and is easy to clean.

Pros Hardie Plank siding include:

  • Can be painted or stained
  • Comes in a variety of patterns and designs
  • Great for maintaining the appearance of historic homes
  • Made from sustainable materials
  • Known for keeping pests out

Neither vinyl nor fiber cement is particularly effective at conserving energy. Both require that the home has some layer of insulation installed. Many prefer fiber cement siding for its natural look, even though it does require some maintenance over the years. Fiber cement is also more customizable and has many options for those looking to spruce up the look of their home.

If you’re unsure which type is best for you, contact Classic Construction at 804-794-5690 or get a free quote online. Our friendly experts are happy to talk you through the process and suggest the best materials based on your budget, needs, and lifestyle.

Questions To Ask Before Hiring a Home Remodeling Company

When hiring a company to work at your home, it’s important to ask some vital questions. There are no wrong questions to ask and most homeowners even have a long list. We’ve compiled a top 5 of these questions to help get you started.

1) Is the work and materials used under a warranty? This question is extremely important and the answer is twofold. Any quality remodeling company worth hiring will stand behind its work. When doing so they are saying, “Yes, we provide a trusted service and we perform the work and provide the products we would want in our own homes.” Products such as appliances and building materials like siding come with specific manufacturer warranties. Professional contractors will warranty the work and their quality workmanship.

2) What is the timeline for this project? The answer to this question depends on the project but it’s a good question to ask so you can plan accordingly with your schedule. An entire kitchen or bathroom remodel takes longer than an exterior deck, for example. An experienced contractor has likely completed many projects similar to yours in their company’s history. They will have an accurate timeline based on the materials available and any inspections required, which all affect the completion date. They will put all the variables together and discuss a realistic timeline for completion.

3) Do you have references such as customer testimonials? Knowing that others have hired the company and have been satisfied with the work is a huge plus. A company’s reviews are perhaps one of its biggest assets. In any business, a quality company strives to keep its customers happy and knows the importance of this. You can ask the home remodeler for references or ask if they have a website with reviews.

4) What is the company’s history? When it comes to hiring anyone, job experience is a must. That isn’t to say a new company isn’t providing a good service, yet an experienced contractor will know the ins and outs of the trade. When it comes to a remodel project there’s a lot involved. From inspections required by state and county offices to ordering specific materials for the job, experience and a company with a proven track record go a long way to keep things moving along smoothly.

Ask about the company’s history and the work background of the individuals who will be performing the work. Classic Construction has been providing top-notch remodel work since 2001 and has become a leading contractor in Richmond, Virginia. Our company president ensures excellence by working closely with all aspects of the projects.

5) How will this remodelling work affect our routine and household? Depending on the area in which you’re having the work done, whether it’s a bathroom, kitchen, or an exterior project, will play into how it affects your living space. If you’re having a bathroom remodeled but have another bathroom to use, then it’s likely your routine won’t be disrupted much, if at all. On the other hand, if your kitchen is being remodeled there obviously will be some daily interruptions while the project is being completed. Your home remodeling company will address all your concerns and give you a realistic scenario.

Classic Construction is your local, trusted home remodeling company, proudly serving the Richmond, Virginia area with experienced quality work. Our customer testimonials speak for themselves and many of the products we use come with lifetime warranties. How Often Does Siding Need to Be Replaced?

Siding Replace

Your home’s siding is a vital part of the structure and is the first defense against the elements. Siding occasionally has to be refinished, retouched, or replaced. Most materials used as siding in homes deteriorate naturally and in different ways, depending on the climate and natural resources where you live.

Here’s how often you should replace or repair your siding, depending on what you have installed.

Wood Siding Panels Require Frequent Maintenance

Compared to the materials created today, wood is a lot more high-maintenance. However, most homes all over the world are made with wood materials as it’s one of the oldest building materials, and it is often cheaper and more accessible. Wood siding can last between 20 to 30 years if it is maintained properly. You should have a record of the last time the wood was replaced. It may have been mentioned by the previous homeowners and considered in the cost. Otherwise, you should do a yearly inspection, ensuring the wood isn’t affected by pests and weather damage. Cracks, breaks, and chips all compromise the efficiency of wood siding. Wood siding also requires refinishing paint every five years or so. If your wood siding loses its looks, it may be time to replace it.

Aluminum Siding May Need Replacing

Also a popular building material for its accessible price, aluminum lasts about 15 years until it needs to be replaced. According to most contractors, aluminum is both convenient and not. It is a good quality material that will protect your home from the elements, but it has a quick shelf life because it is soft enough to be punctured by rocks, twigs, and other debris. It is popular because it requires less maintenance than wood siding — you almost never have to repaint it, saving you money in the long run. Aluminum has lost popularity since advancements like vinyl siding became available to the public.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is the most popular material. It costs more than aluminum and wood options, but it requires almost no maintenance and can last several decades longer than any other building material on this list, between 60 to 100 years. It doesn’t rot like wood, and pests can’t destroy it, which is already a huge benefit for homeowners. Vinyl siding doesn’t need to be repainted and it is easy to clean with just a hose.

Fiber Cement

Another popular material, fiber cement, can easily last 100 years with minimal repainting and maintenance. It’s pricier but factors into the value of your home because of its quality and features. This material will not be easily damaged no matter what kind of weather conditions you live in. Pests have no desire to make homes in fiber cement siding, so you won’t have to worry about termites or mice, which are a costly problem for homeowners. Most importantly, it will maintain curb appeal and the color won’t fade over time.

How Do You Know if Siding Should Be Replaced?

A good way is to look at when the last time the siding was replaced and inspect your current siding for damage. You may not know what to look for, but you can have a contractor come out for an inspection. They’ll immediately let you know if it is a repair or replacement job.

Call Classic Construction at 804-794-5690 or contact us online for a consultation. We’ve served the Richmond community for over 20 years and have all the latest materials and styles available for your renovation. Our professional contractors provide the highest quality of care for every project.
